Liquid Helium TEM Sample Holders
Based on our patented cooling principle, we offer cryo sample holders for different TEM brands.
Near absolute zero
Liquid Helium Temperatures
Our sample holders use liquid helium to reach a base temperature of 5.2 K. Starting from room temperature, the holder cools down to base within one minute, minimizing waiting time for measurements and optimizing microscope use. Once cold, this temperature can be held with a temperature stability of +/- 2.5 mK for as long as there is helium in the dewar, which can easily exceed 24 hours. We currently offer holders that are compatible with JEOL, Thermo Fischer Scientific, and Nion electron microscopes. For maximum resolution, these sample holders are used in conjunction with our CORVUS cryogenic stage and the TUBUS liquid helium transfer line.

In-Situ Capabilites
Samples, mounted onto standard 3 mm TEM grids, can be fixed onto a chip which easily slides into the sample holder. Each sample holder can be upgraded with optional electrical contacts — established via a set of pogo pins — to enable electrical biasing. We are currently working on developing MEMS chips to provide localized sample heating for measurements from liquid helium temperature up to room temperature.
Under Development
Cryo-Cathodoluminescence
Our team is in the process of engineering a specialised liquid helium holder, tailored specifically for use with NION transmission electron microscopes. In addition to its primary function, this innovative holder can be modified to facilitate cathodoluminescence (CL) experiments, particularly catering to the needs of the Research Group LPS led by Dr. Mathieu Kociak at the University of Paris-Sud. For the CL setup, we utilise the Mönch light-collecting mirror, which is positioned from the side and supplied by Attolight. This project marks the debut of a NION-compatible sample holder designed by condenZero, with the installations scheduled for completion by 2025.
